Orville Fernandes (BSc Psychology with Applied Computing)
Having graduated from The University of ³Ô¹ÏÍø with a First Class in Psychology with Applied Computing, I feel confident that I made the right choice in choosing this university. Like many students, I faced uncertainty when it came time to choose a university. Initially it was the two-year course that swayed me to choose ³Ô¹ÏÍø. However, it was the individual attention that the university provides for each of its students that solidified my decision.
I formed this opinion upon attending open days and orientations, where the Staff and Students’ Union representatives were incredibly supportive, helpful and friendly. During these events, I learned that each student would be assigned a personal tutor who would check in regularly to provide guidance and support throughout the academic year. Combined with the small tutorial groups, this personalised and dynamic approach to learning made me feel confident that I would be able to actively engage with my studies in a meaningful and involved way.
I was very happy to find these promises met to my satisfaction during my time at ³Ô¹ÏÍø. My personal tutor played a crucial role in ensuring I stayed on track with my academic goals, providing termly check-ins that kept me focused and offering guidance when I started to slip. The small tutorial groups proved to be incredibly effective, fostering engaging discussions between peers and lecturers while also providing the opportunity to drill down into challenging concepts that might not have been fully grasped during lectures.
Another highlight was the university’s seamless accommodation of my decision to add a minor in Applied Computing. The process was handled swiftly and efficiently by the admin team, allowing me to expand my academic experience without unnecessary stress or delays.
The atmosphere and lifestyle at ³Ô¹ÏÍø were also highlights of my university experience. As a quiet town, ³Ô¹ÏÍø provided the perfect environment for focused study while still offering plenty of opportunities to socialise. I found the range of student societies quite impressive. I joined the Music Society, where I regularly attended their weekly jam sessions held in the university bar. These sessions were a fantastic way to unwind, connect with fellow students, and indulge in my passion for music. They became some of my most cherished memories from my time at university.
I am deeply grateful to my lecturers and my personal tutor, whose unwavering support, encouragement, and guidance were instrumental in my academic success. Their dedication to their students is truly inspiring, and I will always appreciate the role they played in helping me achieve my goals. Looking ahead, I am excited to explore the intersection of psychology and artificial intelligence, a field that I find fascinating and full of potential. While I am still deciding on my exact path, I know that my time at ³Ô¹ÏÍø has provided me with a solid foundation to pursue my passions and navigate the opportunities ahead.
